Sherman Lewis Fields, 88, of Elkton, died Aug. 24, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Fields was born Oct. 15, 1919, in the Newtown area of Elkton, and was the son of the late Nathan and Maude Nizer Fields.

He was a devoted member of the Mt. Paran Baptist Church in Elkton, where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board, assistant superintendent and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Deacon Stewards Layman Union and the Gooden Brothers Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9292. He served in the United States Army during World War II and retired as a Staff Sgt. after 20 years of service. Following his military career, he worked at Metro Pants Factory in Harrisonburg and the Farmers & Merchants Bank in Elkton.

His wife, Ethel Mae Franklin Fields, preceded him in death. Mr. Fields is survived by a son, Rudy Fields and wife, Donna, of Elkton; two sisters, Evelyn Rankin of New Market and Imogene Holmes of Harrisburg, Pa.; former wife, Margaret Nizer of Elkton; sister-in-law, Allene Fields of Elkton; three granddaughters, Charity, Kristin and Lauren Fields; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at the Mt. Paran Baptist Church in the Newtown area of Elkton with the Rev. Michael Turner, Elder Benjamin Cubbage, Rev. Thomas Harrison, Rev. A.T. Crawley, Rev. William Grant and Rev. Linda Lassiter officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Paran Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Friends may also call at the Fields home at any time.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Paran Baptist Church, 1229 Mt. Paran Church Road, Elkton, VA 22827.

	I met Mr. Fields years ago when I did the service work for Whitesel Music. He was always telling good stories and easy to get along with. While I was there to work on the hammond organ he would want to do anything he could to make the job easier. He will be missed.

	I never knew Mr. fields personally but I did know him as a fellow Veteran. I too am a WW2 vet and I would always see him at the Veterans memorial service at Stonewall Park each year. He presented himself as a typical career soldier,very neat and upright. He will be missed. My deepest sympathy to the family. God Bless each of you and Peace be with all of you.

	Mr. Fields was a friend to the Elkton community. It was always a honor to meet him and have a friendly chat. I also remember him at the Veterans day service standing tall and proud. Mr Fields will be missed but always rembered. May God bless and keep you as a family in his care. In my prayers

	Pastor Crawley was Deacon Fields Pastor  for five years, Dec. Fields was a dear men  and friend to all. We will always remember  his kind, caring and giving ways. He loved his  family, church and community. He will be   missed by many. May God continue to bless  and keep his family is our prayer.  Pastor and Mrs. Allen T. Crawley
