Lathan McDonald

Lathan Eugene McDonald, 81, of Elkton, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Mr. McDonald was born May 10, 1927, in Elkton, and was a son of the late Eugene C. and Mary Ann Crawford McDonald.

He was a lifetime resident of the Elkton area. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of the Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292. He worked in construction and was a carpenter foreman for many years.

On July 21, 1945, he married Stella Marie Dean, who preceded him in death March 14, 2008.

Survivors include two sons, Steve E. McDonald and A. Wayne McDonald; three daughters, L. “Diane” Smiley, Joyce E. Turner and Sandy K. Hammer, all of Elkton; a brother, Lurty Mowbray of Alexandria; two sisters, Juanita Stanley of Elkton and Pauline Andrews of Colonial Heights; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Gerald Meeks will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Friday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg with graveside rites by Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the McDonald home at any time.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Elkton Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 91, Elkton, VA 22827.

I am related to Lathan somehow, but I never really got to meet him. My grandparents speak highly of him. May you all have peace in your lives and have courage to make it through the days.

Sandy I was real sorry to hear about ypur Dad. He was always a joy to talk to when he came in the Valley Banner. You were lucky to have such a sweet Dad. May all the happy memories live within your heart and never fade away.
