Henry C. Hisey Jr.

Henry Clyde "H.C." Hisey Jr., 86, of Elkton, died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Sunnyside Presbyterian Home.

Mr. Hisey was born Feb. 25, 1922, in Shenandoah, Va., and was the son of the late Henry Clyde and Clarice Baker Hisey.

He attended Elon College and was a graduate of Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla.

Mr. Hisey served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Following the war, Mr. Hisey moved to Elkton. In the late 1940s, he and his twin brother, Robert Lee "Bobby" Hisey II, started the Hisey Mink Farm, a business they continued to operate until the early 1960s.

On Oct. 4, 1952, he married Alice Baker Hisey, who died on March 11, 2004. Throughout their marriage, they were inseparable companions who shared many interests, hobbies and adventures.

Mr. Hisey retired from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce as a federal-state market news reporter.

He was an Elkton resident for more than 50 years and was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 450 in Harrisonburg for more than 50 years and was a lifetime member of the Gooden Brothers VFW Post No. 9292 and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Mr. Hisey loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. In later years, he and his wife, Alice, enjoyed metal detecting and took great pleasure in being able to return jewelry they found to its original owners. He was interested in the history of the Shenandoah Valley. During the 1960s he and his wife restored a 200-year-old log cabin in the Dean Mountain area.

Surviving are two sons, Henry Clyde Hisey III and wife, Margie, of Keezletown and Riedel Scott Hisey and wife, Denise, of Elkton; a daughter, Clarice Mae Hisey Armentrout and husband, Dana, of Harrisonburg; a sister, Barbara Hisey Trevett of Richmond; five grandchildren, Brook Hisey, Riedel Scott Hisey Jr., Alison Armentrout Crosby and husband, Thomas "Tommy," Forrest Hisey and Daniel Hisey; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Hisey is preceded in death by his twin brother.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, at Elkton United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow at the Methodist Cemetery in Shenandoah.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Monday, May 12, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elkton Rescue Squad, the Elkton Fire Department or the RMH Hospice.
