Agnes Jenkins Dinges

Agnes Jenkins Dinges, 90, passed away on Aug. 31, 2010, at Emeritus of Harrisonburg, her home for the past eight years. She was the beloved daughter of the late Karl Lester Jenkins and Rena Blose Jenkins.

She is survived by her two daughters, Susan G. Robertson and husband, Wayne, of Harrisonburg, and Patricia G. Baker and husband, Jim, of Stanley; and two sons, Allen R. Greene Jr., and wife, May, of Portland, Ore., and John B. Greene and wife, Becky, of Winchester. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Deborah Bowers, Karen Chapman, Jamie Baker, Amy Johnson, Vickie Greene, Alicia Greene, and J.B. Greene. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Matthew Glick, Jon-Michael Glick, Megan Chapman, Jessica King, Jordan Baker, Micah Baker, Isaac Baker, Leo Johnson, Harlan Johnson and Tanner Dofflemyer; three great-great-grandchildren, Grace Chapman, Jacob Glick and Caden King; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Known as "Aggie" to her friends and relatives, she was born on Oct. 25, 1919, in Page County and grew up in Stanley. She is the last member of her immediate family, having been predeceased by four sisters, Elsie Jenkins, Alma Jenkins, Aurelia Morris and Peggy Woodward, and one brother, Karl L. Jenkins Jr., and a great-granddaughter, Laura Ashley Glick. She was also predeceased by her husband, Charles Randolph Dinges, who died Oct. 12, 1996.

She attended school in Stanley and upon her graduation in 1935, at the age of 16, left for Strayer Business College in Washington, D.C. Upon receiving her degree, she worked for several years as a secretary before she was married to Allen R. Greene, of Roanoke, who died in 1950. After his death, she returned to her home in Stanley and with the help of her family, raised her four children.

In 1950, she was employed by the Farmers & Merchants Bank National Bank of Stanley (now Pioneer Bank), working there for 45 years. Aggie loved her position at the bank and the employees with whom she worked and the customers she served. She was very active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Stanley Fire Department for a number of years and assisted her family in their restaurant and theater businesses. While her children were in school, she was also very active in the Parent Teacher Association and in all of their many school activities. Aggie was known to share her bounty with those less fortunate and on Sundays could be seen delivering meals to her shut-in neighbors and acquaintances.

Aggie loved to travel and lived to take many trips, both throughout the United States, Canada and abroad, some with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling to Washington, D.C., to shop and to attend many wonderful performances at The Kennedy Center. She was devoted to her family and particularly enjoyed her many trips with them to Myrtle Beach, picnics on the Skyline Drive, and all the wonderful family get-togethers throughout the years. She also was an avid walker, who loved to experience the outdoors ... she always said, "You can sleep anytime, so you had better enjoy yourself now."

In 1997, Aggie relocated to Harrisonburg and attended the Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene. In 2002, after suffering an accident while walking in her favorite park, she entered Loyalton of Harrisonburg (now Emeritus), an assisted living facility. She was very active there and while physically able could be found to be leading the exercise group activities, serving as the representative for the patients on the management board, and playing the bells for residents at other facilities, as well as for social functions at Emeritus. She cherished the many friendships she made there with the staff, employees, and residents until her death.

At her request, her services will be private, for immediate family only.  Interment will be in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Kyger Funeral Home of Harrisonburg.

Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice in her memory.

Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
