Henry "Hank" Lee Dorman

Henry "Hank" Lee Dorman of Harrisonburg passed away on Aug. 31, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Henry was born in Rockingham County to the late Charlie Dorman and Bessie Sites Dorman on Dec. 12, 1935. He attended Keezletown Elementary School and Montevideo High School.

Henry started employment at Shank Wholesalers in Harrisonburg in 1958, working as a delivery driver. Through years of dedicated work and service to his friends, he retired in 2000 as the general manager.

Hank was a member at McGaheysville United Methodist Church, and more recently attended Mount Olive Brethren Church and Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church. He believed in the promises of our Lord and Savior, and rests with Him today.

Henry was a lifelong sports fan and was committed to facilitating sports opportunities for the youth of Rockingham County. Throughout various stages of his life, he was a Little League basketball and football coach, a Valley and County League baseball official, and a spotter for the football programs at Montevideo and Spotswood High Schools.

Hank was perhaps best known for his time spent in and around the game of golf. He served on the board of directors at Lakeview Golf Course for 36 years, serving as president for 17 years. Henry won three Lakeview Club Championships and four Lakeview Amateur Championships. During his last round of golf on Aug. 17, 2010, Hank scored his 16th hole-in-one.

In the past few years, Henry enjoyed travel with his special friend and partner, Selma L. Wine, who survives. They just returned from the Grand Canyon in early August.

Henry shared 43 years and a family with Lavon "Bonnie" Dorman, who survives. Hank was a committed family man who is also survived by three sons, Terry Dorman and wife, Donna, of Elkton, Va., Mark Dorman and wife, Joni, of Greensboro, N.C., and Dana Dorman and wife, Kim, of Greensboro, N.C. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The night before he died, Hank was dancing in the living room with his great-granddaughter, Addison.

Henry was preceded in death by his 11 siblings, Charles E. Dorman, Mary Emerson, Nettie Armentrout, Ernest L. Dorman, Charles L. Sites, Dewey D. Dorman, Nancy June Karn, Florence Baker, Bessie Baker, Hiram Dorman and Hanna Hark.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. We will celebrate Hank's life at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at the Kyger Funeral Home with the Rev. Christopher Carr presiding. A potluck fellowship meal will be held on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the park at 8853 Mountain Valley Road, Keezletown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 38, Mount Sidney, VA 24467.

My walking buddy
Hank was my neighbor and walking buddy for a number of year before moving from
McGaheysville and I will not forget our talks and the great advice he passed on
to me. My condolences to his family. What a great spirit and sports loving
person he was and he will be missed. He was a blessing to me!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Henry. Though he was our
salesman through Shank, he was a good friend to our family. We lost our Louise
in December and know that while the loss is deeply felt, there is comfort in
knowing that our loved one is at rest and in a far, far better place.

Henry Dorman Families
Few words can express the sorrow I know you are going through right now. I hope
just a few kind words of how much Hank meant to Debbie and I will help. We
always enjoyed the trips to VMI to see Richard play basketball. There was never
a dull moment on the way to and from the games. I still remember the little
league football and basketball teams I was on that Hank coached and all the high
school games he followed up and down the Valley that Mark and I played. I
enjoyed being around him when I stayed with you guys. I know God was smiling
when he saw Hank strolling up to the gates knowing he was getting a another
blessing. He will be truly missed by everyone. We will be keeping you all in
thoughts and prayers while we are out of town this weekend.
With Deepest
Sympathy,
Doug & Debbie
