James Burton Joyner Sr., 69, of Harrisonburg, Va., passed away Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at his home.
He was born Feb. 1, 1941, in Greenville, N.C., and was the son of the late James Marshall and Mary Catherine "Cricket" Jackson Joyner.
He graduated from Belvoir Falkland High School in Greenville in 1959 and Roanoke Bible College in 1964. He began preaching during his college years and continued until his death. He was instrumental in the founding of Valley Church of Christ in Harrisonburg along with Dickie Bolton. He also served in the ministry in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and various parts of Virginia. In his retirement years, he also volunteered at Valley Christian School.
Christ's Church and seeking the lost was his first love. Mr. Joyner looked for ways to encourage others and was always ready to lend a helping hand. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, meditating at the river, and visiting the livestock auction. He was also an avid fan of Rockingham County League Baseball and especially the Clover Hill Bucks.
Mr. Joyner is survived by his wife, Catherine Windham Joyner of Harrisonburg; five children, Wanda Ashley and husband, Lee, of Bassett, Va., James Joyner Jr. and wife, Rita, of Washington, N.C., Sherry Joyner of Elizabeth City, N.C., Sharon Lewis and husband, Craig, of Winchester, Va., and Becky Martin and husband, Mike, of Luray, Va.; a sister, Linda Joyner of Indonesia; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at Valley Church of Christ at 7 p.m.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kyger Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Valley Christian School, 1570 Virginia Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22802.
