Ernest Carl "Son" Morris, 94, of Port Republic, passed away Aug. 20, 2010, at his home.
Mr. Morris was born Oct. 27, 1915, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late Ernest C. and Rachel Elizabeth Morris.
He grew up in the Port Republic area and worked in the C.C.C. Camps on the southern section of Skyline Drive in the 1930s and served our country in the United States Navy during World War II. He enjoyed bird watching and caring for his many pets.
He was a member of the Grace Memorial Episcopal Church at Lynwood and the Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292 at Elkton. He retired from Merck & Co. in 1980 after 34 years of service.
On Nov. 8, 1941, he married the former Janet Lee Raines, who preceded him in death on April 1, 2001.
Mr. Morris is survived by a daughter, Brenda Morris Patten of Port Republic; grandson, Thomas W. Hilbert Jr. and wife, Leigh Ann; granddaughter, Sydney Patten Wright and husband, Christopher W.; great-grandchildren, Elias Grayson Hilbert, Larkin May Wright, and Tyler Edward Wright; and former son-in-law, Thomas W. Hilbert. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Morris Hilbert, an infant daughter, and eight siblings.
The Rev. Stuart Wood will conduct a memorial service 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Grace Memorial Episcopal Church. Burial will follow at the Port Republic Cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening (Monday) from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
