Merle Elizabeth Shifflett, 79, of Elkton, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Merle was born May 27, 1931, in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Charles Henry and Ella Blanche Meadows Collier.
She was a homemaker most of her life and she also worked in housekeeping at Massanutten for numerous years. She loved working in her flowerbeds.
She was preceded in death on Oct. 30, 2000, by her husband of over 65 years, James Lawrence Shifflett.
She is survived by a son, Lawrence "Doodle" Edward Shifflett; brothers Robert Collier of Grove Hill and John Collier of Luray; sisters, Bessie Gordon of Manassas, Lillie Eppard of Elkton and Sue Wright of Falls Church; grandchildren, Shannon Marie Shifflett of Shenandoah, Alma Irene Travilian of Harrisonburg, Jackie Lavonne Myers of Elkton; and 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 o'clock Wednesday Aug. 18, 2010, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton with the Rev. James Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Elk Run Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and anytime at Shannon's home, 911 Carol Ave., Shenandoah, Va.
