Warren Lee "Sonnie" Sampson

Warren Lee "Sonnie" Sampson, 78, of Grottoes, Va., passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Rockingham County on Oct. 15, 1931, and was the son of the late Lloyd Alfred Sampson and the late Elenora Mitchell-Sampson-Menefee-Deputy.

He served in the U.S. Armored Cavalry in Germany from Oct. 16, 1948, until his honorable discharge from the Army on June 2, 1952. After his discharge, he moved to Maryland, where he worked for Shell Oil Co. He returned to Virginia in 1965, where he became a master plumber and a first-class electrician forming his own construction company. He was a member of the local VFW and the VA Bear Hunters Association.

He was an active member of the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren. He was a former member of the Grottoes Rescue Squad and the Grottoes Volunteer Fire Department.

He was united in marriage on June 23, 1952, to Ruth (Kirby) Sampson.

Surviving with his wife, are his daughters, Debby Kay Sampson Lilly and husband, Roy, of Churchville, Teresa Ann Sampson McCauley and husband, Jeffrey Sr., of Grottoes, and Yvonne Virginia Sampson Jordaans and husband, J.P., of Mechanicsville; seven grandchildren, Paige Elizabeth Hailey, Rebeka Lynn Knott and husband, Shannon, Sarah Ann Wharton and husband, Marvin, Jeffrey "Allen" McCauley Jr., Joshua Adam McCauley, Brian Patrick Jordaans, and Shannon Renee Jordaans; and three great-grandchildren, Brian Lee Hailey, Andrew Jordan Willett, and Rylyn Maeve Martin.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2010, at Mill Creek Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Lee Kinsey officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mill Creek Church of the Brethren Building Fund, 7600 Port Republic Road, Port Republic, VA 24471.

This earths lost is heavens gain! So sorry Warren couldnt improve but his
suffering is over now. My heart hurts for you Ruth, debby, teresa.yvonne, allen,
roy. jeff and all. Ive just had back surgery and cant attend but i will continue
to pray for each of you during your lost,We loved Warren and will always be
gratiful that he took rhe time to build our house.
