Gordon Eugene Washington

Gordon Eugene Washington, 77, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Washington was born on April 11, 1933, in Spring Creek, and was a son of the late Henry and Lena Scott Washington.

Eugene retired from the Street Department for the City of Harrisonburg, where he worked as a supervisor before his retirement in 1992. He also worked as a long-distance truck driver for Houff Transfer and Harrisonburg Motor Express. He loved to hunt and was an avid Atlanta Braves Fan.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War from 1951 until 1955. He was a member of the Dayton American Legion Post No. 27 and was a life member and former post commander of Rion-Bowman VFW Post No. 632 in Harrisonburg. 

On Oct. 26, 1957, he married Evelyn Hassler, who survives.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Washington is survived by a stepson, Carroll Shoemaker of Harrisonburg; two brothers, Warren Washington and wife, Myrtle, of Mount Crawford, and Jerry Washington and wife, Lois, of Grottoes; three sisters, Arminna Fitzwater of Mount Crawford, Judy Custer and husband, Joe, of Mount Clinton, and Sue Long and husband, Larry, of Pineville; one granddaughter, DeeDee Shoemaker of Harrisonburg; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, "Topper." Mr. Washington was preceded in death by three brothers, Sam Washington, Joe Washington, and Charles Washington; and a sister, Marguerite Bodkin.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 18, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with the Rev. Sonny Henkel officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

The Washington family will receive friends on Friday from 1 until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA, P.O. Box 413, Harrisonburg, VA 22803, or to the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1477, Harrisonburg, VA 22803.

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I hope the
knowledge that your friends and colleagues share your loss and are here for you
in yout time of need will be of some comfort.

I will keep all of you in my
thoughts and prayers for strength through the Lord. I sincerely apologize for
being unable to come to the family time or the service but due to work it is not
possible for me to do so.

I care for you all deeply and hope you will find
comfort that your loved one is in a better place and not suffering any longer.

So sorry to hear about Mr. Washington. He was a very nice man that I got to
know at Dr. Greens office. I send Prayers and Blessings to the family during
this difficult time.
