Adrienne Barry Schellhorn, 85, of McGaheysville, passed away at her home on May 12, 2010. Born on July 3, 1924, in Santa Barbara, Calif., she was the daughter of the late William T. Barry and Elsie Johnson Barry. During the Great Depression, her family moved to the Washington, D.C., area, where she lived most of her life.
She attended George Washington University and majored in English literature. She was an active member of the GWU's Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. As a young adult, Adrienne was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and the English Speaking Society. She was instrumental in launching the St. John's College Great Books Program for middle school students and later the Adult's Great Book Program in northern Virginia.
In 1946, she married the late Joseph R. Schellhorn of Sheffield, Mass. As devoted members of the Episcopal Church, they taught Sunday school and first attended Grace Church in Alexandria, St. Dunston's and St. John's churches in McLean and then Emmanuel in Harrisonburg. As a homemaker, Adrienne loved gourmet cooking and enjoyed gardening roses. She was passionate about classical music and opera. Before retiring to Harrisonburg in 1993, she and Joe lived in McLean.
Surviving Adrienne are one son, Stephen Schellhorn and his wife, Sara, of Harrisonburg; two daughters, Catherine Schellhorn of McGaheysville and Carolyn Windmiller and her husband, Roland, of Harrisonburg; and one granddaughter, Beth Schellhorn of Harrisonburg.
