Karl Klawiter of Massanutten, 83, died at Rockingham Memorial Hospital May 5, 2010. Karl was born Sept, 25, 1926, in South St. Paul, Minn., and was the son of the late Carl and Irene Klawiter.
Karl served in World War II in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Infantry 13th Paratroopers Maintenance Division. He was an accomplished jazz pianist, spending years in the jazz club circuit in Minnesota. He continued his love of music into retirement most recently playing with the Massanutten Sympathy Orchestra. He made his career in the manufacturing field, retiring as a trainer for Reynolds Metals. Karl was an avid golfer and chess player. In retirement, he volunteered with the Lion's Club and American Legion in Elkton. Karl was also a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church. A good father and loving husband, Karl liked to surround himself with music, friends and celebration.
Karl is survived by his wife Marjorie; two sons, Kim Klaiwiter and wife, Kathleen, of Minnesota, and Stephen Klawiter of California; a daughter, Kathryn Snead and husband, Ryan, of Virginia; five stepdaughters, Patricia Selberg-Smith and husband, Charles, of Iowa, Dee Dee Zak and husband, Tom, of South Dakota, Teri Gutierrez and husband, Tony, of North Carolina, Polly White and husband, Doug, of Virginia and Melissa Sargeant and husband, Joe, of Virginia; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three half-sisters, Gerry Foley and husband, Jim, Patricia Delkowski and husband, Vern, and Susan Ryan all of Minnesota; and one half-brother, Tom Ryan of Georgia.
Karl was preceded in death by his first wife Alberta Klawiter of California; a brother Wendell Klawiter of Minnesota and daughter Karol Hicks of Iowa.
Visitation will take place at the Klawiter Home, 2777 Hopkins Drive, Massanutten on Friday May 7 from 4 to 7 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at Elkton United Methodist Church on Saturday May 8 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Elkton United Methodist Church or the Jazz Foundation of America at www.jazzfoundation.org.
