Janet Q. Detamore

Janet Cree Littlejohn Queen Detamore, a resident of Charleston, S.C., passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2010, at the age of 91. She was born in Gorebridge, Midlothian, Scotland, on June 29, 1918, and was a daughter of the late John and Janet Littlejohn Queen. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Wilton Detamore, in 1973 and her brother, John Queen Jr.

Mrs. Detamore relocated to the United States with her family as a child. They settled in West Virginia, where she resided until attending Strayer Business College in Washington, D.C. While obtaining her education, she encountered her future husband and, following their marriage, they moved back to his hometown in Dayton. She was employed with Chesapeake-Western Railroad for 35 years and was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Court Square. She was also a former member of the United Commercial Travelers of America Ladies Auxiliary and the Pilot Club of Harrisonburg. She enjoyed, and will be remembered as, being a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, as well as a friend to all whom she encountered. 

Surviving are two daughters, Joanne D. Williams and husband, Richard, of Summerville, S.C., and Deborah D. Showker and husband, Joe, of Harrisonburg; four grandchildren, Christopher Scot Williams, Melissa W. Platt, Jennifer S. Lucas and Christen E. Showker; two great-grandchildren, Charlotte Platt and Will Platt; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg with the Rev. Tom Holden officiating. Burial will follow in the Dayton Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Central and Western Virginia Chapter, 1160 Pepsi Place, Suite 306, Charlottesville, VA 22901.
