Claude L. Dean, 84, of Elkton, Va., went to be with our Lord on April 25, 2010, at 2:25 p.m.
Born on Oct. 12, 1925, in Mount Pleasant, Va., he was the son of the late Alfred Ernest Dean and Nellie Mae Hitt.
Claude resided in Elkton, Va., all of his life and was a bear hunter and known around the Elkton area as "The Gray Fox." He was formerly employed at M erck & Company as a chemical operator from Sept. 17, 1948, until Oct. 1, 1987. During his lifetime, he worked for A.B. Torrence and was a carpenter by trade. He was also a member of the Elkton Pentecostal Church, the Massanutten Hunt Club and the Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292.
He was in the U.S. Navy from Feb. 14, 1944, to Jan. 15, 1946, and served on the U.S.S. Tallulah and received the American Theatre Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific and three stars, the Philippine Liberation and one star, and Victory-World War II medal.
He was married to the former Ruth E. Samuels for 50 years. Surviving are two daughters, Judy E. Dean of Dale City, Va., and Brenda Dean Smith and her husband, Marvin, of Elkton; a son, Gary L. Dean and his wife, Cindy, of Elkton; four grandchildren, Shari Pendleton, Daniel Dean, Monica Shaver and Melanie Breeden; four great-grandchildren, Logan Lamb, Dylan Shaver, Autumn Alt and Tyler Alt; seven sisters, Anna Chaffman, Edith Shifflett, Pauline McCauley, Beatrice Dean, Lois Dovel, Odessa Dean, and Joyce Dean. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard Dean, Floyd Dean and Ernest Dean, and a sister, Shelby Slivinski.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at the Kyger Funeral Home chapel in Elkton with the Rev. Travis Hensley officiating. Burial will follow at the Elk Run Cemetery with graveside rites by the Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
