Eastham "Dave" Jenkins Jr., 80, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Harrisonburg on Jan. 12, 1930, and was the son of the late Eastham and Icie Shirkey Jenkins. He was also preceded in death by his twin grandsons, Tyler and Andrew Jenkins.
Mr. Jenkins was a lifelong resident of the Valley and graduated from Harrisonburg High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and an active member of Mu hlenberg Lutheran Church.
In 1962, he founded the area's first telephone answering service and later established Travel Counsellors, in which he owned and operated, along with his wife, for 40 years. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his granddaughter.
On Oct. 3, 1970, he married the former Marian Dove, who survives. Also surviving are his son, James S. "Kip" Jenkins and wife, Lisa, of McGaheysville; his sister, Audrey J. Rose and husband, George, of Harrisonburg; his very special granddaughter, Natalie F. Jenkins; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at Muhlenberg Lutheran Church in Harrisonburg with Pastor David Nelson and the Rev. Dr. Fred Miller presiding. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church.
A private burial will be held at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.
