Richard Murrell Wimer, United States Navy, Ret., 82, of Harrisonburg, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at his home.
Mr. Wimer was born Sept. 12, 1927, in Crabbottom, Va. (Highland County), and was the son of the late Ernest Coe and Myrtle Vandevander Wimer.
He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 632 in Harrisonburg and enjoyed coin collecting, lawn care and camping.
Mr. Wimer served our country in the United States Navy for 24 years, during which he was awarded a Bronze Star Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with two Stars, three Purple Heart Medals for wounds received in Vietnam, Good Conduct Medal and the Navy Expeditionary Medal. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer. After retirement from the Navy, he worked for Flippo's Oil Company for 15 years.
On Nov. 10, 1956, he married Margaret (Good) Wimer, who survives. Also surviving are sons, Richard D. Wimer and wife, Adrian, of Grottoes and Timothy A. Wimer and wife, Ann, of Harrisonburg; daughters, Diana L. McNett and husband, Scott W., of Bridgewater and Peggy S. Hottinger and husband, Dennis, of Linville; a niece raised in the home, Patricia Fitzwater, of Harrisonburg; brothers, William Wimer and wife, Sally, of Grottoes and Harold Wimer and wife, Glenda, of Stanardsville; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Mr. Wimer was preceded in death by sisters, Wanda Keener and Madeline Ryan, and a grandson, Matthew Hottinger.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg with the Rev. Jim Radford officiating. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg with military honors from the United States Navy.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends may also call at the Wimer home at any time.
