James Erven Monger, 81, of Bethel Church Road, Elkton, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial after battling cancer.
Mr. Monger was born in Rockingham County on Aug. 8, 1928, and was a son of the late Erven and Mary Long Monger.
James was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Gooden Brothers VFW Post 9292, the Junior Order of United American Mechanics 149, both in Elkton, and an honorary member of the Elkton Volunteer Fire Company. He was a tractor-trailer driver for Paul Dovel Jr. and L.W. Monger Jr., and also a retired farmer.
James is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Betty Jane Burkett, whom he married on April 19, 1952. Also surviving are a son, James E. "Jim" Monger Jr. and fiancée, Penny Miller, of Elkton; a daughter, Bonnie Lou Monger and husband, Larry, of Elkton; a brother, Franklin Monger and wife, Karen, of Port Republic; a sister, Betty M. Workman and husband, Doug, of Elkton; three grandchildren, Jamie Zimmerman and husband, Austin, Bradley Monger and Steven Monger; four great-grandchildren, Abigail and Austin Zimmerman, Jamie and Branson Monger; and two nieces, Jill and Terri.
A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton with Pastor Dan Bassett officiating.
The family will receive friends following the memorial service on Wednesday. Friends may also call at the Monger home at any time.
