Ernest Zachariah Holmes, 91, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.
He was born on July 21, 1918, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to the late George and Lily Wilson Holmes. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Walter Holmes, and his sister, Ruth Holmes.
Mr. Holmes served in the Canadian Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1945. Following his military duty, he was employed as a salesman with AP Green Fire Brick for 41 years in Canada, Pennsylvania, Michigan and New England. He retired in July of 1983 and relocated to Harrisonburg, where he served as a volunteer with several organizations, including Meals for the Homebound and the RMH Volunteer Auxiliary.
Throughout his life, Mr. Holmes was active in the churches where he lived. He served the Lord faithfully as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, song leader and in numerous positions and on many committees. He was currently a member of West Side Baptist Church where, among other activities, he was involved in prison ministry for 25 years.
On Jan. 22, 1944, he married Elizabeth "Betty" Whiteford Holmes, who survives. Also surviving are his son, Doug Holmes and Sherry of Howell, Mich.; his daughter, Marlene Webb and Merv of Harrisonburg; grandchildren, Kristin Webb of Richmond, Brian Webb and wife, Katie, of Arlington, Nathan Holmes and wife, Megan, of Southfield, Mich., and Amy Buszek and husband, John, of Ferndale, Mich.; one brother, David Holmes and wife, Galina, of Stratford, Ontario, Canada; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at West Side Baptist Church in Harrisonburg with Pastor Troy Pearson officiating. Interment will be private at Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg.
The family will receive friends this evening (Monday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
Memorial contributions may be made to West Side Baptist Church Building Fund, 715 West Wolfe St., Harrisonburg, VA 22802, or the RMH Foundation, 235 Cantrell Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22801, for a memorial bench at the new hospital.
