Richard James Swartwout, 74, of Penn Laird, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Swartwout was born on Feb. 12, 1935, in New York state, and was a son of the late Valentine Baldwin and Mary Hylis Swartwout.

He graduated from UFMMA with Navy Ensign and BSME (Marine). Richard retired from Dunham-Bush, where he worked as a mechanical engineer for 40 years.

On Aug. 12, 1956, he married Eunice Strong, who preceded him in death on March 3, 2003.

Mr. Swartwout is survived by a son, Lawrence "Larry" D. Swartwout of Hinton; a daughter, Victoria Morris and husband, Edward, of Penn Laird; a brother, Charlie Swartwout of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
