John Franklin Breeden, 94, of Shenandoah, passed away Jan. 21, 2010, at his home.
Mr. Breeden was born Oct. 7, 1915, near Grove Hill in Page County, and was the son of the late Edgar W. and Maudie Lee Cave Breeden.
Mr. Breeden worked for Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore, Md., Alliance in Shenandoah and owned and operated a grocery store in Berrytown, near Elkton and in Page County, for a number of years. He retired from Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He attended the Shenandoah Assembly of God Church and was a member of the Shenandoah Moose Lodge and AARP. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and being with his friends.
On June 6, 1992, he married Linda Vance Breeden, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Martha Ann Downey and husband, Forest, of Elkton, and Fonda Painter of Shenandoah; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren and several special nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Mr. Breeden was preceded in death by his first wife, Elva F. Breeden, and brothers, Charles E. "Cut" Breeden, Howard B. "Red" Breeden and Grover C. "Pud" Breeden.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at the Shenandoah Assembly of God Church. Pastor Carter Dean and the Rev. Rick Kerfoot will conduct the service. Burial will follow at Sam Comer Cemetery in Steam Hollow.
The family received friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
