Virginia Bernice Smith, 84, died at her home, 1548 Hawthorne Circle, VMRC Harrisonburg, Va., on Jan. 13, 2010, at 12:15 a.m.
Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 17, 1925, in Plattsmouth, Neb., and was a daughter of the late Joseph and Frances Bierl.
Ginny worked for the Union Pacific Railroad during World War II as a telegrapher and station agent in Wyoming. Most of her years were spent in raising her family of eight children. She was a 4-H leader for 14 years and worked for a short time for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. in Washington, D.C., and at the Smithsonian Institution in the "Reading is Fundamental (RIF) Program."
On Nov. 8, 1947, she married Terence J. Smith. They have eight children, 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She and her husband retired to Harrisonburg in 1974, where they lived on a small farm in Rockingham County for 30 years.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She served on numerous committees, including as a Eucharistic Minister and Rosary co-chairman for over 20 years.
Ginny loved her flower gardens and raised her own vegetables. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, needlepoint and was extremely creative in all crafts. She has traveled with her husband to 49 of the 50 U.S. states and over 18 different countries.
She is survived by five daughters and three sons: Teresa Hunt and her husband, Gary, of Ellicott City, Md., Kathleen Fridley and her husband, Larry, of Mineral, Va., Robert Smith and his wife, Ann Marie, of High Springs, Fla., Marcia McGlamary and her husband, Charles, of Harrisonburg, Va., Terence M. Smith and his wife, Eileen, of Beaverton, Ore., Rosemary Nicholson and her husband, Jack, of Harrisonburg, Va., James Smith and his wife, Debbie, of McGaheysville, Va., and Mary Wells and her husband, Robert, of Melbourne Beach, Fla.
Also surviving are one brother, Frank J. Bierl of Plattsmouth, Neb., and two sisters, Sophia Vinduska of Plattsmouth, Neb., and Frances Fellingham of Seven Lakes, N.C. She was preceded in death by one sister, Teresa Harris.
There will be the rosary at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg followed by a visitation for friends and relatives. An additional visitation will be held at 10 a.m. prior to a Mass of the Resurrection at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Father Thomas Mattingly presiding. Burial will be at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.
