Karen Lea Fullenkamp Grindal, 61, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Grindal was born on Jan. 3, 1948, in Fort Madison, Iowa, and was the daughter of the late Louis and Mary Herold Fullenkamp.
Karen graduated from Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, as a Registered Nurse. She had been employed by Rockingham Memorial Hospital since April of 1979. Mrs. Grindal enjoyed volunteering with several local organizations, including the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society and was named Volunteer of the Year. She also volunteered with the Harrisonburg City School System in several different positions. Karen enjoyed playing bridge and played with multiple groups locally.
On Aug. 23, 1968, she married Baard Grindal, who survives.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Anmarie Adkins of Earlysville; a son, Baard Jason Grindal and wife, Loriann, of Fairfax, Va.; two brothers, Daniel Fullenkamp and Mark Fullenkamp, both of Rantoul, Ill.; four grandchildren, Andrew Adkins, Nicholas Adkins, Olivia Grindal, Greyson Grindal; and several nieces and nephews.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, from 5:30 until 8 p.m. at the Harrisonburg Elks Lodge No. 450, 482 S. Main St., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 N. Beauregard St., Alexandria, VA 22311.
