Helen S. Newman

Helen Simmons Newman, 80, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. She was born in Hinton on Aug. 31, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Oscar and Fern Joseph Simmons. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Marvin Lee Newman, and two brothers, Louis Simmons and Douglas Simmons.

Mrs. Newman was a longtime member of Grace Baptist Church in Harrisonburg and recently had attended Marlbrook Baptist Church in Raphine, where her son pastors. She had previously been employed at Owens Brockway in Harrisonburg and enjoyed fishing at the beach and spending time and mentoring her granddaughters.

Surviving are her daughter, Gail N. Weatherford and husband, Terry, of Harrisonburg; her son, Jeff M. Newman and wife, Sally, of Raphine; three grandchildren, Anneka Campbell, Katelyn Dickerson and her husband, Mike, and Ashley Newman; a number of nieces and nephews and an aunt, who was like a sister, Genevieve Todd, of Harrisonburg.

 Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg with Pastors William Robertson Jr. and Mark Mays officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Crawford Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pleasant Memories
Ever since I have known Helen, I've knew her to be a God Fearing Woman,to whom
it mattered. I'll miss seeing her for a while. But I'll always remember when I
think about her that when I see her she always tell me I have been praying for

Deepest Sympathy
My deepest sympathies goes out to the entire Newman Family on the loss of such a
beautiful lady. She was a God Fearing Woman & her life showed it. Miss Helen was
a pleasure to know. I would see her a Red Front & what a joy it was to see her
each & every time. Miss Helen would always give me a hug, tell me she loved me &
that she was praying for me & my family. Miss Helen will be greatly missed, but
I know she is rejoicing & singing in heaven with Jesus. She will no longer
