Helen Parker Whetzel, 83, of Baker, W.Va., passed away on Dec. 27, 2009, at E.A. Hawse Care Center.
She was born on Nov. 8, 1926, in Baker, and was a daughter of the late Harvey and Ada Hammond Parker. She was the wife of Vernon \"Johnny\" Whetzel, who preceded her in death after 56 years of marriage.
Helen was a longtime resident of Harrisonburg and previously was employed with the Harrisonburg Police Department. She was a superintendent of the safety program in conjunction with the city school system and was more commonly known as the school crossing guard at Waterman and Keister elementary schools for 40 years. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and her family.
Surviving are her son, Ronald V. Whetzel and wife, Lea, of Moorefield, W.Va.; her daughter, Kay W. McDonald and husband, Kevin, of Hanover, Pa.; three brothers, Ray \"Jim\" Parker of Harrisonburg, Nick Parker of Virginia Beach and Don Parker of Baker, W.Va.; her sister, June Combs of Baker, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Krista Grefe, Tracy Dodson and husband, Chris, Jonathan Whetzel and wife, Susan, and Keeli Comrie and husband, Joshua; five great-grandchildren, Tayler Dodson, Brayden Dodson, Jacob Grefe, Brant Comrie and Seven Whetzel; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her infant daughter, one brother and one sister.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg with Pastor Wayne Wright officiating.
A graveside service will follow the funeral at 2 p.m. at New Dale Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Baker, W.Va., with Pastor Ernest Halterman officiating.
The family will receive friends today (Tuesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
