Betty Jane Burks McCready, 71, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Friday, Dec. 25, 2009, Christmas morning, at Oak Lea Nursing Home.
She was born on Aug. 24, 1938, and was the daughter of the late Albert Crews and Elsie Bryant Burks.
She was a hard worker all her life in the home as well as out of the home. She was a stay-at-home mother until her youngest child was able to go to middle school. She was then employed with Marshall\'s Inc. in Bridgewater. She retired from Marshalls in 1992. She was a very loving mother and wife.
On March 31, 1967, she married Donald Lewis McCready Sr. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Al Burks, and a family friend and lifelong friend of her daughter, Tammie Jo \"Jodi\" Kyger Shifflett.
She is survived by two brothers, James Burks and Bernard Burks, both of Gladstone, Va.; four sisters, Gertrude Eagle of Lynchburg, Va., Gloria McCormick of Gladstone, Va., Hazel Tyree of Amherst, Va., and Linda Totty of Appomattox, Va.; two children, Donald L. McCready Jr. and wife, Missy, of Swoope, Va.; her daughter and caregiver for most of her illness, La Donna Lynn Burns and husband, Kelly A. Burns Jr., of Harrisonburg, Va.; five grandchildren, Tony A. Burns, Faith M. Lopez-Juarez and husband, Marcelino Lopez-Juarez, Tiffany L. Burns, Kimberly D. Burns, all of Harrisonburg, and Sean P. McCready of Swoope, Va.; and one great-grandson, Joel Lopez-Juarez of Harrisonburg, Va.
She will be cremated with a memorial service held at a later date.
