Lois Jean Phillips Comer, 67, of Shenandoah, died peacefully in her home surrounded by family and friends after a courageous 10-month battle with cancer on Sept. 13, 2009.
Lois was born Dec. 3, 1941, in Harrisonburg, and was the daughter of the late John E. \"Eddie\" and Mildred Elizabeth Williams Phillips of Shenandoah.
On Aug. 7, 1965, she married Vincent J. \"Buddy\" Comer, who survives. She is also survived by three children, Mark Vincent Comer of Shenandoah, Lori Elizabeth Comer Painter and husband, Ron, of Luray, and Laney Michelle Comer Dallas and husband, Randy, of Shenandoah. She is also survived by her four special grandchildren, in which she was especially attached to and who were the light of her life, Aaron David and Camaron Elizabeth Painter of Luray and Bailey Blair and Leah Paige Dallas of Shenandoah. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne and Joyce Comer, Joyce Shifflett, and Gloria and Larry Austin, all of Shenandoah, as well as nephews, Timmy, Paul, and Shaun Comer and Derrick Austin.
As a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Shenandoah, Lois was a devout Christian, who always practiced what she preached. She served as a Sunday school teacher for many years, on the church homecoming/anniversary committee, church council, as well as beautifully decorating the church for numerous special occasions.
Lois was a 1960 graduate of Shenandoah High School and a 1964 graduate of Madison College with a bachelor\'s degree in art education. She began her teaching career in Fairfax County and retired from Page County Public Schools in 2002. While in Page County, Lois taught art at the Page County High School, Luray High School and at various times in all the elementary schools in the county. In addition, she taught adult art classes for Lord Fairfax Community College.
Lois was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, whose many interests included art, antique collecting, traveling, and attending sporting events with her husband, Buddy. She never met a stranger and had an infectious smile and sense of humor. Her smile and outgoing disposition were a light to anyone who met her. She was a talented artist and was always willing to lend her talents for any organizations that asked. She was on the Shenandoah Community Library Board of Trustees, past president and current board member of the Shenandoah Alumni Association, the Board of Directors of the Page Technical Center Nursing Program, the Shenandoah Memorial Day Festival Committee, the Steven\'s Cottage Heritage Committee, and a member of her beloved Perceptor Iota Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Shenandoah with the Revs. Patti Covington, Mark Briehl and Doug Gochenour officiating. Burial will follow at the Mount Lebanon Church Cemetery in Comertown.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
