Monica Dawn Harpine Lucas, 37, of Harrisonburg, Va., died peacefully on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at the University of Maryland Medical Hospital in Baltimore, Md. 

Monica was born in Rockingham County on April 11, 1972. She was the daughter of Eileen Mullenax of Weyers Cave and Gary Harpine of Mount Solon, Va.

Mrs. Lucas is survived by her husband, Antoine D. Lucas, and their four children, Blake, Caden, Bryson and McKenna Lucas; brother, Tony Harpine; stepbrother, Shea Mullenax; stepsisters, Marcella Mullenax, Britteny Dean and Jessica Sherfey; and stepmother Cindy Counts.

Mrs. Lucas is preceded in death by her stepfather, Don Mullenax.

Monica received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work from James Madison University in December 2006.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2009, at 4 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg with Pastor Larry Rising officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Kyger Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Food Bank, c/o Valley Church at P.O Box 629, Harrisonburg, VA 22803.

I would like to send my deepest sympathies to Monica's family and friends. Monica was a beautiful person inside and out who's smile could light up a room. I had the pleasure of attending high school with Monica and vividly remember the days of summer school our junior year. One morning Monica, Jan Canaday and I skipped the morning portion of our class and hit the Shoney's breakfast bar. When we finally showed back up for Mr. Bartley's geography class, a student said, 'I could have sworn I saw your car this morning driving past the school' to which Monica confidently replied, 'No you didn't'. I had the opportunity to reconnect with Monica prior to her getting very sick and for that I am thankful. I reminded her of all the good times we spent in summer school as she laughed and agreed. I had the priveledge of meeting Monica through working at Kids Harbor and taking care of Bryson. I will never forget how Monica would come 20 minutes early to drop off Bryson at the daycare.
