Ray E. McDorman

Ray Elburn McDorman of 4316 Stratford Road, Richmond, Va., born May 3, 1929, died July 14, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Richmond, Va., surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Harrisonburg, Va., the son of the late James and Addie Ray McDorman.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dr. Hazel Estes McDorman; son, Stephen and wife, Linda; daughters, Susan McDorman and Jane McDorman Garnett and husband, Tom; son, Scott McDorman and wife, Angie; grandsons, Greg and Jonathan McDorman; niece, Linda Zirkle and her family; nephew, Jimmy Carr; many beloved cousins, and aunt, June McDorman.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Reba McDorman Carr.

Ray graduated from Mount Clinton High School and Bridgewater College in Rockingham County. In college, he was a member of the Debate Team. In his senior year, his debate team won the National Debate Tournament.

Ray was active in his community, coached Little League, worked in the Cub Scouts and served as president of the Traylor Estates Civic Association. At age 16, he joined the Harrisonburg, Va., Volunteer Fire Company No. 4 and thereafter served over 27 years as a volunteer in fire departments and rescue squads in each town where he lived. He served a term as Chief of the Bon Air Volunteer Fire Department. For many years, he sang in the church choir and enjoyed his participation in the Methodist Men’s group.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He provided many hours of enjoyment for his family and friends as he drove his boat both on the James River and the Chesapeake Bay. In retirement, he and his wife traveled most of the 50 states and enjoyed genealogy research. They compiled and published a genealogy of his McDorman family.

The body will rest at the Kyger Funeral Home, Harrisonburg, Va. The family will receive family and friends at the funeral home on Thursday, July 16, 2009, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A private burial service will be held at the Clover Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery, Dayton, Va.  A memorial service will be held at the Bon Air United Methodist Church, Richmond, Va., on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of floral remembrances, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA  22312.
