Charles Richard “Rick” Watson, 82, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.
He was born March 25, 1927, in Bells, Texas, to the late James and Velma Savage Watson. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Edward P., James E. and William T. Watson.
Surviving family are his wife, Leona “Lee” Crider Watson; two sons, Paul R. Watson of Warsaw, Poland, and Earl “Brook” Watson and wife, Angie, of Round Rock, Texas; two grandchildren, Olivia Watson and Nicole Watson; and two brothers, Michael Watson of Venice, Calif., and David Watson of Salt Lake City, Utah.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg and had recently resided at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center since January of 2007. Rick was educated in the Dallas public schools and had graduated from N.R. Crozier Technical High School. He obtained an Associate Arts degree from Santa Monica City College in California and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.
He established an architectural office in Bryan, Texas, in 1958 and discontinued his practice in 1970 to head the development of various projects for Tenneco Inc. in Houston and other locations. Some of the notable developments include the 47-story 1100 Milam Tower, the 30-story Hyatt Regency, the 15-story Southwest Garage, the twin 18-story towers in the West Loop at Post Oak Park and a residential-recreational development in West Columbia Lakes, Texas.
In 1974, he returned to his own office in Bryan, Texas, where he will be remembered for such landmarks as the Sul Ross Elementary School, the Somerville, Texas Junior High School, the College Station City Hall, the Plantation Shopping Center in Bryan and the Memory-Tech compact disc manufacturing plant in Plano, Texas. In later years, he provided architectural services, construction advice and consultations and served as an expert witness in litigations.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg with Dr. John Sloop officiating.
