Almus M. Smith, 76, a longtime resident of Shenandoah, passed away on Wednesday Aug. 26, 2009, at his residence peacefully in his favorite chair.
Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy from December of 1950 until November of 1954. He was a lifetime member of the Rion-Bowman VFW Post No. 632 in Harrisonburg. He was employed with Circle K grocery for many years and more recently managed the Food Lion grocery until his retirement on Jan. 1, 1996. During his retirement Mr. Smith traveled throughout the United States. He loved gardening and you could often find him working in the yard.
He was born Almus William Murphy Brock Smith on Nov. 16, 1932, in Corydon, Ind., and was the son of the late Marvin and Jessie Brock Smith. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Zona Maxine Benham, and brothers Charles P. Smith, Ansel R. Smith, Floyd V. Smith and Elvin G. Smith.
Mr. Smith is survived by longtime companion Shela L. Tolby; three daughters, Linda Smith of Glendale, Ariz., Joanne Thibeault of Dayton, Cindra Carey of Middleboro, Mass.; a son, David C. Smith of Whitman, Mass.; two sisters, Idell A. Davis of Hamilton, Ala., and Elma Faye Smith of Corydon, Ind.; 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was dearly loved and will be missed by his entire family.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg with Pastor Roger Dove officiating.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
