He married Margaret E. Wyant Dean, who preceded him in death June 7, 1987. Surviving children are daughters Louella A. Meadows and husband Allen, Karen Urbanek and husband Paul, and Barbara (Linkie) Hottinger and husband Dennis, all of Elkton; one sister, Margaret Breeden; two brothers, Randal F. Dean and Maynard W. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Blanche Dean, Lois Eppard and Geneieve Sillmon.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday morning, Aug. 27, 2009, at the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church near Elkton with Pastor Nona F. Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.
