Ivan C. Shifflett, Sr.

Ivan Carroll “Dick” Shifflett Sr., 79, of Shenandoah, passed away Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Shifflett was born Oct. 3, 1929, in Charlottesville, and was the son of the late Richard Lee and Qunnie Mowbray Shifflett.

Mr. Shifflett served our country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of the Rion Bowman VFW Post 632 in Harrisonburg, where he drove the D.A.V. van to V.A. hospitals for a number of years. He attended the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Shenandoah and was a former member of the Elkton Eagles. He retired from Goods Transfer Trucking after more than 30 years of service.

On Feb. 23, 1949, he married Dorothy Merica Shifflett, who preceded him in death on Jan. 12, 2004. He is survived by two sons, Ivan C. “Butch” Shifflett Jr. of Grottoes and Gary Wayne Shifflett of Bluemont; three daughters, Paula Faye Purdham, Brenda Kay Tappy and Beverly Jo Emerick, all of Shenandoah; three brothers, Leonard N. Shifflett of Houston, Texas, Alvin P. Shifflett of Elkton, Leon S. Shifflett of Salt Lake City, Utah; two sisters, Elizabeth M. Meadows of Elkton, Bonnie S. Tracy of Harrisonburg; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Wilson, Richard and Roger Shifflett; and a grandson, Dale Shifflett.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton with Pastor Mike Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Elkton. Friends may also call at the home of his daughter, Paula Purdham, at any time.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shenandoah Rescue Squad, 544 Fourth St., Shenandoah, VA 22849.

sorry to hear of your sorrow. i was a patient in the room with mr shifflett this
time at rehab....got to know him pretty well....he was a swell person and am
sure u will be lost without him....again my condolance...may god bless

Paula and family,
So sorry to hear about your dad. I feel bad that we did not
make it to the funeral home. It is almost 8:00pm on Sunday night and I just
checked my school email regarding your dad. Please know that you are in our
