Leonard Lorraine Fields Jr., 56, son of Allene Elizabeth Fields and the late Leonard Lorraine Fields Sr. was born on Aug. 2, 1952, in Rockingham County, Va., and departed this life on June 21, 2009, in Raleigh, N.C. 
Leonard attended Newtown Elementary School in Elkton, Va., and graduated from Elkton High School. He attended North Carolina Central University and later graduated in 1975 from Madison College, now James Madison University. He was a member of the newly established football program and scored the first touchdown in the history of the University.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and loyal friend, who had the uncanny ability to lighten the mood through his good humor and laughter. He was an avid football fan and enjoyed the JMU Dukes and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He retired from Merck & Company, Inc. after 30 years. He began his career at the Elkton Stonewall Plant as a first-line supervisor. He later was employed as the assistant personnel manager in human resources. After several years at the Stonewall Plant, he was promoted to human resource manager at the Flint River Plant in Albany, Ga. Leonard relocated to the Cherokee Plant in Wilson, N.C., and was instrumental in the startup of the Durham, N.C. facility.
In addition to his mother, he leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 31 years, Debra A. (Bryan) Fields; two sons, Bryan M. Fields and Calvin L. Fields and wife, Nikita; one grandson, Calour M. Fields, all of Raleigh, N.C.; three sisters, Doris J. Fields and Carol A. Fields of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Joyce E. Clark and husband, James, of Elkton, Va.; three brothers-in-law, Julian S. Bryan and James Bryan of Atlanta, Ga., and Marcus Bryan and wife, Debra, of Raleigh, N.C.; one niece, Debra F. Reed and husband, Antonio Sr. of Upper Marlboro, Md.; two nephews, Cameron Bryan and Marcus M. Bryan of Raleigh, N.C.; three great-nephews, Antonio Jr., Andre
