Norma Jean Nuscher Fridinger, 85, of Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2009, at the home of her daughter on South Dogwood Drive in Harrisonburg. She had been in declining health for quite some time and died with family by her side.
She was born in Endicott, N.Y., on July 9, 1923, to the late Adolph and Bertha Billings Nuscher. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Douglas F. Nuscher and Eugene H. Nuscher.
On Aug. 18, 1951, she married The Rev. Donald Nelson Fridinger, who survives. She is also survived by two daughters, Sandra K. Meadows and husband, Calvin, of Elkton and Kimberly R. Fridinger of Harrisonburg; two grandchildren, Douglas S. Meadows and wife, Kelly, and April N. Smith and husband, Jeff; four great-grandchildren, Simone Meadows, Katie Meadows, Andrew Smith and Madeline Smith; two special cousins, John C. Sterling and Nancy Sterling of Ithaca, N.Y.; and family friend, Deirdre Staton.
Mrs. Fridinger was a graduate of Elmira Business Institute in Elmira, N.Y. She was a secretary by profession, spending 10 years in this capacity at the Dayton Journal Herald, Dayton, Ohio. She and her husband were an effective ministry team in serving churches throughout the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church for 47 years. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women and its predecessor organizations of the Evangelical United Brethren Church. She currently had been attending Otterbein United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2009, at Otterbein United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Grogan officiating. Burial will be private at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 9 at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
