Alvan Eugene Kennedy, 85, of Bridgewater, died Monday, June 8, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Alvan was born on Oct. 24, 1923, in Dale Enterprise. He was the son of the late Casper Clay and Myrta Ritchie Kennedy.
He was an Army veteran serving in the European Theater during World War II. He was also awarded the Bronze Star during his three years of service. He went on to work as an Oil Burner Technician for Long Oil, then Cline Oil, and was a part-time driver with City Cab in Harrisonburg for 30 years. He also worked with The Valley Programs for the Aging for 10 years. He was employed for 66 years and retired in 2001.
He was a member of the First Assembly of God and belonged to AAA for 30 years. He had a great love for music and played in bands over the years to include the Hinton Band, Veterans Band, and the Harrisonburg Boy Band. He was also well liked and had many friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 35 years, Vada Smith Kennedy.
In 1978, he married Peggy Custer Kennedy, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Charles Alvin Kennedy; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Lawrence J. Ritchie and wife, Wanda.
