Leona Raish Long, 87, of Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community, died Friday, May 22, 2009, surrounded by family and friends. She had not been well for a number of years.
She was born in Rockingham County on May 7, 1922, and was the daughter of the late W.I. Raish and Lula C. Spitzer Raish.
After graduating from Dayton High School and then Bridgewater College, she did graduate work at Madison College and the University of Virginia.
She taught in Rockingham and Augusta counties for 30 years and retired from John Wayland Intermediate School. She was a member of the Mount Clinton United Methodist Church, the Carl D. Lee VFW Auxiliary and the RMH Auxiliary.
On Feb. 25, 1948, she married Samuel Claude Long, who preceded her in death in March 1988.
Surviving are two sons, Rich Long and wife, Kara, of Harrisonburg, and Bill Long of Weyers Cave; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Ethel Cashell of Harrisonburg; and a brother, Herb Raish and wife, Margie, of Bridgewater. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy, Richard, and Harold Raish.
Following cremation there will be a private burial. A memorial service will be scheduled in June at the Meredith Chapel at Sunnyside.
