John Tillotson Showalter, 89, of Ruther Glen, Va., passed away on May 20, 2009, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. He was born on Sept. 10, 1919, in Clearfield, Pa., and was the son of the late Dr. Amos Martin and Dorothy Stone Showalter. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Esther Shank Showalter, in 1990.
Mr. Showalter graduated from Bridgewater College and was a U.S. Army veteran, who served during World War II. He was employed with RCA Inc./General Electric as a field engineer and upon retirement, his hobbies included Ham and MARS Radio operations and real estate.
Surviving family include two sons, Jerry A. Shifflett and wife, Brenda, of Broadway, and Jay Dee Showalter and wife, Pam, of Harrisonburg; his daughter, Jackie S. Oates and husband, David, of Beaverdam, Va.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 24, 2009, at Weaver's Cemetery in Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends this evening (Saturday) from 7 to 8 at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Bridgewater Fund, 402 E. College St., Bridgewater, VA 22812-1599.
