Sherry H. Gordon

Sherry Helsley Gordon, 54, of Port Republic, Va., peacefully passed away on Friday, April 3, 2009, in the loving company of her family, friends, and pastor.

Sherry was born on Jan. 28, 1955, in Woodstock, Va., and was the Active Imagedaughter of the late Elmer A. Helsley Jr. and Charlotte Bauserman Helsley.

Sherry attended Central High School and received a B.S. in Social Work from James Madison University. She was employed by Harrisonburg-Rockingham County Department of Social Services, where she fulfilled her calling helping those in need.

Sherry never forgot her native Shenandoah County, where she visited often and maintained lifelong friendships. She especially enjoyed spending time with her many friends, loved to cook, especially desserts, which her family says she inherited from her mother. She also had a knack for decorating her home.

Sherry loved to travel; having been places and seen things she never imagined possible as a child. Due to her illness however, she was not able to visit Ireland, a country she always hoped to visit.

Sherry was a committed Christian, devoted to her church, where she served as an elder and deacon. She found great joy helping others in need by working on many mission trips in the U.S. and abroad.

In her spare time, Sherry developed a special interest in playing bridge, and she always found happiness in playing games with friends and family, where her quiet and subtle competitiveness would show.

At the end of every day, nothing brought her more happiness than a brilliant sunset, which put a finishing touch on each day, and helped her always remember how blessed she was in so many ways.

Sherry is survived by her husband of 30 years, Steven H. Gordon, whom she married on Sept. 9, 1978; her daughter, Ashley R. Gordon and boyfriend, Frank Saffoori; her son, Andrew R. Gordon and his wife, Beth L. Gordon. Also surviving are sisters, Sandra H. Simpson and her husband, David Simpson of Hamilton, Va., and Kay Helsley of Woodstock, Va.

The family will receive friends on Monday, April 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kyger Funeral Home located at 3173 Spotswood Trail in Harrisonburg, Va.

Burial service will be held on Tuesday April 7, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. conducted by the Rev. John Leggett at Massanutten Presbyterian Church, located at 50 Indian Trail Road in Penn Laird, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Massanutten Presbyterian Church or to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, in memory of Sherry Gordon.

Friends and family may view this obituary and share memories and condolences at www.kygers.com.

It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Sherry Helsley Gordon.
I have not been in touch with Sherry since 1973, but have often thought of
Sherry and other fellow members of the Central High School Class of '73. All of
us from the Class of '73 share a special bond in that we are all passing through
this world on parallel paths. As time passes, each of us will in turn fall by
the wayside until there is one, and then there is none. As we pass on, others
come to take our place. It is God's master plan for the world. This I know for
sure: the world needs more like Sherry!

We are so sorry about Sherry's passing. We, the members of the Wellness Center
8:30 am class had fun with Sherry for many years. We exercised together,
laughed together, and shared life's ups and downs. Sherry was such a lovely
person and always so gracious and fun loving. We have missed her these past 6
months, and will continue to miss her.

I also appreciate Sherry's
encouragement for the Shenandoah Valley Children's Choir as she enjoyed our
performances and place in the community. She loved hearing the children sing.

The whole aerobics class at the Wellness center sends regards....from Julia,
Sharon L, Sharon J, Mary, Laura, Betty, Betty, Diane, Janine, Lisa, Robin,
Daphyne, Kate, Phyllis, and others.

Steve,

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your wife. I never met Sherry
but she sounds like a beautiful mother and wife. I know you and your family
will miss her tremendously. Please know that you, Ashley, & Andrew are in my

Steve, Ashley, and Andrew I am deeply sorry for your loss. You all have been
great friends and neighbors, and you have been like family to us, welcoming us
to the area with kindness and warmth all those years ago. Sherry was a truly
wonderful person and she will be sorely missed.

Steve, I am sorry for your loss. I met Sherry on your 50th birthday at the bank,
she was such a nice and beautiful woman. My prayers are with you and your
family during this time.

Dear Family

Paul knew you, Steve, high school basketball and church league
softball. He has always been impressed what a loving and athletic and healthy
family you all have been through the years.

I knew Sherry at the Wellness
Center and enjoyed exercising with her. Ireland is my second home so we would
talk about her desire to go to Ireland next. I remember saying that I would
love to help her plan her trip and she said she would remember to chat with me
to avoid all the tourist stuff and enjoy the real Ireland. I am sincerely sorry
that you were not able to make the trip together.

Sherry was always very
positive, and with chin lifted, she did all she could to take care of herself,
her family and encourage her friends.

The world would be strengthened with
more Sherry's in the world!

Our hearts go out to you who are left behind but
comforted by having known this wonderful person in your
life.

Blessin...

Dear Family,

Our hearts and prayers are with you over the loss of your
beloved wife, mother, sister and friend.

Sherry was a patient co-worker and
friend to me when I was an eager new employee at the DSS. I deeply appreciated
the open and warm friendship she immediately offered me as a newcomer to this
area. Her outgoing energy, concern for others, love for the beauty of nature,
fitness, and joy for life were just a few of the outstanding qualities she
shared with others.

We will all miss her very much. She taught me how to sow
seeds of friendship that I hope to pass on to others. I feel very fortunate
that I had an opportunity to know and love this wonderful woman.

Many
blessings from our family to yours.

Dear Ashley & family,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult
time! I heard this song today and thought about your family I find it comforting
and hope you do as well!

I try to hold on to this world with everything I
have
But I feel the weight of what it brings, and the hurt that tries to
grab
The many trials that seem to never end, His word declares this
truth,
that we will enter in this rest with wonders anew

But I hold on to
this hope and the promise that He brings
That there will be a place with no
more suffering

(Chorus)
There will be a day with no more tears, no more
pain, and no more fears
There will be a day when the burdens of this place,
will be no more, we'll see Jesus face to face
But until that day, we'll hold on
to you always

I know the journey seems so long
You feel you’re walking on
your own
But there has never been a step
Where you’ve walked out all
alone
