Lucius C. Frye, Sr.

Lucius C. Frye Sr., 80, of New Market, died March 29, 2009.  Lovingly known as Casey to his family and friends, he was born May 23, 1928, in Glade Spring, Va.  Casey loved his family, his country, and particularly his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  He lived in the Valley for over 30

years with his bride, Edith.  They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on May 18.

A decorated combat veteran, Casey served his country proudly in three wars: World War II (where he was a prisoner of war), Korea, and Vietnam (where he was shot down twice).  A recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star (twice), European- African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with two bronze stars, Germany and Japanese Occupation Ribbon, Army Aviator Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and Army Commendation Medal; he was a helicopter pilot, Green Beret, paratrooper, and coach of the U.S. Army pistol team.  He was selected to the Pan American games as part of the Army's competitive pistol team.  His mission in Vietnam was simple, but unique; retrieve shot-downed aircraft, repair if possible, and return the aircraft and his crew safely back to base. After a distinguished 23-year career in the U.S. Army, Casey directed and implemented one of the largest capitol improvement projects ever undertaken by James Madison University, directing the construction efforts of the football stadium and much of the new build-out on the east side of I-81 that now occupies the campus.  His significant contributions were recognized by having a campus building, known as the Frye building, named in his honor.

A person always ready and willing to help others, Casey frequently looked for opportunities to minister to others, whether he was cutting and taking a cord of wood to someone in need, making them something special from his woodshop, or simply giving them the "shirt off his back" to someone in more need than he.

He is preceded in death by his father, John; his mother, Mattie; his brothers, Bowers, Mack, John, and Roger; and his sisters, Vivian, Nancy; and his daughter, Phyllis.  He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Edith; his brother, Raymond; his sisters, Allison and Jennie; their daughters, Susan and her husband, Gene, Connie and her husband, Chuck; their son, Lucius (Sam) Jr., and his wife, Debbie; and seven grandchildren, Thomas, Ruth Ann, Joseph, Samantha, Aaron, Anna, and Carolyn; and six great-grandchildren, Aaron, Hannah, Dylan, Maxwell, Sara, and Emma.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Kyger Funeral home at 3173 Spotswood Trail, Harrisonburg, VA 22801.  A celebration of Casey's life will be held at 11 a.m. April 1, 2009, at the funeral home.  He will be laid to rest at Linville Creek of the Brethren Church Cemetery following the memorial service.

Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Rockingham Memorial Hospital Hospice, 235 Cantrell Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

Online condolences may be sent to Casey's family by visiting www.kygers.com.

I don\'t know Mr. Frye, but a very good friend of his son, Sam. My thoughts
and prayers go out to the entire Frye family. Mr. Frye would be very proud of
his son, Sam for all the hard work he has done for the Police Department. Sam
conducted my Dad\'s funeral and spoke often of his Dad. If I or my family
can help you in anyway, please contact us. God Bless you and your family. Jeff &

While I never had the honor of meeting Mr. Frye Sr. I am honored to know his
son, Sam, or as "Chape" as I refer to him. It is very apparent the love
that Sam has for his family. I'm so very sorry for your loss. Ya'll have been in
our thoughts and prayers ever since Sam told me about his father's diagnosis. I
will continue to pray for you and your family.

All of us here at the James City County Police Department were sad to learn of
the death of Sam\'s father. It was apparent from reading his obituary that
it was people like him that helped make this country great. Sam and his family
are in our thoughts and prayers.

Though I have never met Casey I have known his son for years. My heart felt
sorrow goes out to all of the family and I know that Casey is at home with
Jesus. I really wish I had had the opportunity to have met and talk with him.
I wish to thank him for dedication and service to this country. Taps - for the

With this great man having contributed so much to so many, even with his
unfortunate passing, his life's work continues to inspire us all.
He indeed
lives on.

My prayers go out to Sam and his family during this difficult time.

Tee- I have so many memories of coming to your home to visit you and Casey when
I was young girl as well as you both coming to ours. I remember the times you
both dressed up at Christmas time, when Casey would get on his CB so I could
hear the train as we were on our way home from your house, playing with Ruthie
and Thomas, and also taking great care of Lassie for us! The love you both
showed my father and I when my mother had passed meant so much to us. Casey was
one of my dad's best friends whom he loved dearly. Thank you for the memories
which will never be forgotten. God bless all of you.
Joy Marcum 2009-03-31 09:58:49

My love and prayers to each of you during this difficult time. Casey was more

I wish I could be there with you today. I spent Sunday fishing and
thinking of how Papaw taught me how to do it. Last night I pulled out a chess
board and remembered playing with him on that large board with the avon pieces.
I am proud to say that I was raised by the two of you.

Mrs. Frye, Mrs. Stewart, Thomas & Ruth,

I saw the obit in the North Fork
Journal and wanted to express my sympathy. I lost my grandmother in November so
I know how hard it is to loose someone who has influenced your life and helped
shape who you are. My thoughts are with you and may Gods\' peace be with
you, also.
