William Homer Voige Jr., 87, Bridgewater and formerly Harrisonburg, was a loving husband and father, an artist whose sense of style punctuated his life and a man who made a difference wherever he lived. He died Monday, March 9, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Bill was born April 27, 1921, in Fort Worth, Texas, the son of William Homer Sr. and Elizabeth Walsh Voige. For most of his childhood and teen years, he lived in Lansing, Mich.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor and was trained as a glider pilot just before the program was abandoned. He served as an air traffic controller on Saipan.
Before shipping out, Bill, who always loved to tell a tale, started a journey that was to become the best story of his life. He met Dorothy Speth at a USO dance in Madison, Wis. A romance sparked that would last nearly 61 years.
When Bill returned from service, Dorothy promised to marry him only if he would pursue his talent and go to art school. They were married Sept. 25, 1946, in Madison, then shipped out on their new adventure, starting with Bill going to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. A few years later, they would move to Painesville, Ohio, where Bill eventually would become sales director for Carlisle
