Max Arthur White

Max Arthur White, born Jan. 27, 1924, in Cherryville, Kan., passed away peacefully at his home Friday, Sept. 12, 2008. Max was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty, and went home to be with her on their 59th wedding anniversary.

Max proudly served in World War II in the 100th Infantry Division, 398 Infantry Regiment as a forward observer. He was wounded in combat in 1944 in Northern France. He received a Purple Heart and a Combat Infantry Badge. After his discharge, he attended Kansas University and received a degree in engineering. In 1961, Max and his family transferred to Virginia, where he was an engineer at H.D. Lee in Broadway. Several years later, he took the position of personnel director at Rockingham Poultry in Timberville and was there until his retirement in the mid-1980s.

Max and Betty were active members of the First Church of the Brethren in Harrisonburg. Max was a master mechanic and felt most at home under a car covered in grease; as a young man, he built a Model T from found parts. Also a music lover, Max was a self-taught pianist and accordion player. When he moved to Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in 2006, he enjoyed playing for the residents at many functions there. Max was an amazing father and grandfather and is survived by his three children, Jann White, David White and Bob White; two daughters-in-law, Ellen and Kathryn; and five grandchildren, Caite, Caleb, Jack, Bridget and Isabella. He will be greatly missed.

Pastor Ron Wyrick will lead a memorial service for friends and family 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008, at VMRC's Strite Auditorium.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.kygers.com.

Jann, David and Bob,
I am sorry to hear about your Dad. Some of my fondest
memories are being with your family at the Timberville house. Your parents were
so much fun to be around. The "good times" will always be in your
hearts. Jann I have a daughter at JMU so I come home often. Let's get together.

Dear Dave, Bob, & Jann & family,

I'm so sorry to hear about Uncle Max
passing. My memories of him and your mother were always great. I have a neat
interview I did with him for a high school history class about his service. I'm
so glad my parents got to visit all of you last year! I'll keep you all in my
prayers.

Your Dad was a constant presence. In all the years, I never heard him raise
his voice. He made being a craftsman look easy, effortless. Betty was ready
for Max. They remain in our hearts.

My last visit with your dad was a couple months ago & quickly the conversation
turned to you three. He was very proud of you all and was also a person that no
one said an unkind word about. God bless you all & it would be great to see you
three sometime. Glen Allen

I'm sorry my schedule today doesn't allow me to attend your father's memorial
service. I remember Max as a truly good man, a hard to find kind of man full of
grace and integrity. Your mother Betty was also such an energizing and
encouraging person. May God bless us all as we, with you, mourn their loss and
pass on their legacy.

Dear Jann, Dave, Bob and Family,
We were so sorry to hear about your dad. Bill
held them in very high regard. While I didn\'t know either of your parents
that well, the warm welcome all of you gave us in 1997 when we visited Virginia
was awesome. Your folks were a great combination that complimented each other
quite well. May good family memories bring you comfort in the days ahead.
