Stanley Elburn Smith Sr., 78, of Elkton, died Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Smith was born Sept. 12, 1929, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Claude J. Smith Sr. and Lillian McDorman Smith.

He was a member of the Mount Olive Brethren Church and had played fast-pitch softball for a number of years. He had retired from Wayne-Tex in Waynesboro after 28 years. He had most recently worked at Wal-Mart.

On June 11, 1949, he married Marelia Morris

Sissy, I was so sorry to hear about Stan. Please extend my sympathy to the other family members. May God give you the strength you need in the difficult days ahead. I lost my husband (Ray) seventeen years ago and I know how you feel. May your precious memories give you comfort. I remember what a great ball player he was and the best pitcher I ever saw. My Ray thought he was the best. I remember the day my daughter (Crissy) called and asked us to come down and help fix a flat tire for you and Stan. There Stan was being his strong determined self fixing that tire. Crissy was so worried about him. Later we saw you at Harrisonburg and you told us you did get to the Pizza Hut. Stanley will be missed by all of us. He was such a caring nice person. Our prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. God bless.
