Gary Steven Knight, 57, of Harrisonburg, died Monday, May 5, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Mr. Knight was born Aug. 21, 1950, in Elkton, and was a son of the late Ornie L. Knight and Lillian E. Meadows.

He was an Army veteran and worked for the City of Harrisonburg in Parks and Recreation until retiring.

His wife, Patricia C. Knight, preceded him in death March 26, 1997. They were married Nov. 19, 1972.

Survivors include a son, Christopher B. Knight; a brother, Bobby R. Knight; a half brother, Boyd W. Knight; and a number of nieces and nephews.

No services will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rockingham Memorial Hospital Cancer Center, 100 E. Grace St., Harrisonburg, VA 22801.

Gary was a very quiet compassionate man. I knew him for 7 years and was always impressed by his views on life and how he had a "never give up" philosophy for life. When things got rough for him he always bounced back. Being from the same generation, we had wonderful conversations over the years. What a great sense of humor! Gary NEVER had anything bad to say about anybody unless they truely deserved it. His main focus was to be there for Chris. He really loved you. Talked about you alot. Chris if you ever want to hang out you know where to contact me. Your Dad enriched my life as well as many others. He reminded me alot of Will Rogers, very simplistic observations and always right. Heaven has gained yet another special angel. It was a pleasure and a honor knowing Gary. Of the many things I always heard people say when commenting about him was his determination to fight and mostly the love that he had for his son. Know that he will always be with you.
